Weeds grow in the jointing sand, not up from below. Keeping the joints full with kiln-dried sand, or upgrading to a polymeric jointing compound, denies seeds the gap they need. A yearly sweep, the odd weedkiller treatment and prompt topping-up after any jet washing keep a block drive largely weed-free, even in damp Fen conditions.
Sealing is optional but worthwhile. It stabilises the jointing sand, resists oil and tyre staining, and lifts the colour, especially on concrete blocks.
