In depth
Surface water has to go somewhere, and on flat Fen ground near Wisbech that takes planning. We install channel and ACO drains across driveways and patios, set gullies at low points, and lay pipework to falls that keep water moving toward the right outfall. Getting levels and falls correct stops ponding, protects the property from standing water, and keeps hard surfaces usable through the wet Fenland winters rather than turning into puddles.
Soakaways only work if the ground can take the water. In much of the Fens the high water table and silty ground mean a standard soakaway may struggle, so we size and site them correctly to Part H, ideally on the back of a percolation test, and keep them the right distance from buildings. Where the ground will not soak away, we look at alternatives such as attenuation or a controlled connection to a watercourse or surface water sewer, subject to the relevant consent.
Persistently wet gardens and plots often need land drainage rather than a single soakaway. We install perforated land drains in gravel-filled trenches, wrapped in geotextile where needed, to collect water across an area and carry it away to a suitable outfall. On heavy, low-lying Fen ground this can transform a waterlogged garden or working area, taking the water table down enough for the ground to dry, firm up and drain properly.
Foul drainage has to be laid accurately to work for the long term. We connect to the existing foul sewer or septic system, lay pipes to the correct falls so solids do not stand, bed and surround them properly, and fit inspection chambers and rodding access at the right points. Everything is set out to the drainage design and inspected by Building Control where required, then tested before backfilling so you know the system runs as it should.

Not always. If the water table is high or the ground is silty and slow-draining, a soakaway can fill up and stop working. We assess the ground, ideally with a percolation test, before committing to one. Where a soakaway is not viable, we design an alternative such as attenuation or a consented connection to a watercourse or surface water sewer, so your surface water is dealt with properly.
Drains need enough fall to self-clean without running too fast. For foul drainage a common guide is around 1 in 40 for 100mm pipe, but the correct fall depends on pipe size and layout. Surface water channels and gullies are set to gentle, consistent falls toward the outfall. We set out every run to the drainage design so water and solids keep moving and nothing stands in the pipe.
